A wonderful piece of Massachusetts maritime history! This vintage linen mat or dresser scarf features a detailed hand-embroidered depiction of Leonard Craske's iconic "Man at the Wheel" Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial statue.
Rendered in crisp navy blue thread with cross-stitched stone pedestal detailing, the inscription reads "THEY THAT GO DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS 1623–1923". The piece is framed by a delicate red and blue cross-stitched border and finished with a hand-crocheted dark blue scalloped border edging.
